Starting at the age of 22 as a Firefighter with Devon Fire & Rescue Service, Gary progressed through the ranks of the Fire Service. A significant career progression saw him become a Fire Safety Inspecting Officer in Plymouth and Torbay. His subsequent appointments as the Senior Fire Safety Officer for Somerset Fire Brigade and then Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service led to him influencing national policy by working with the Chief Fire Officers Association (now National Fire Chiefs Council). During this time he became the Chair of the Business Safety Group, working with Government Ministers to reduce Red Tape and improve regulation across all UK Fire & Rescue Services. Gary's Fire Service career progressed and he achieved the rank of Assistant Chief Fire Officer in East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service. The continuation of the national role also led to his appointment as an independent member of the Building Regulations Advisory Committee (BRAC).
In addition to his Fire Service specific qualifications, Gary has been awarded with a Master's Degree in Professional Development and Management by the University of Exeter.
Gary has been a Member of the Institute of Fire Engineers (IFE) since 1994, and was appointed as a Fellow of the Institute in 2014.
Since retiring from the Fire & Rescue Service in 2016, Gary has continued to work in the Fire Safety sector. He is listed on the IFE Fire Risk Register of Assessors and holds the EngTech qualification.
